In the Chinese calendar, 2026 is a horse year paired with fire, the same pairing as 1966. In Japan that pairing carried such a bad name that births fell by about a quarter in 1966, as many couples avoided having a daughter that year. In a Bazi chart it is simply fire on fire: warm, fast and bright, sometimes too much. Whether that suits you depends on the rest of your chart, not on the year.
When the year starts and ends
In a Bazi chart the 2026 fire horse year runs from 4 February 2026 (04:02 China time) until the next solar new year on 4 February 2027 (09:46). Chinese New Year, which follows the moon, began the lunar year on 17 February 2026, and the lunar year ends on 5 February 2027.
So babies born between 4 and 16 February 2026 are fire horses in a chart but still wood snakes by the lunar calendar. In 1966 it went the other way: Chinese New Year came first, on 21 January, so anyone born between then and the solar new year on 4 February is a horse by the lunar calendar and still a wood snake in a chart.
The pairing comes round every sixty years: 1906, 1966, 2026, and next in 2086.
Why 1966 is famous in Japan
In Japan the fire horse year is called hinoeuma, and a superstition from the Edo period held that women born in it would be headstrong and bring misfortune to their husbands. It became attached to the story of Yaoya Oshichi, a girl believed to have been born in the fire horse year of 1666, who was executed for arson in 1683.
The belief was strong enough to show up in the national statistics. Japan recorded 1,360,974 births in 1966, about a quarter fewer than the year before, and the number bounced straight back in 1967. It is still one of the clearest examples of a belief changing a country's birth figures.

Both halves are fire, which few pillars manage: the stem is yang Fire and 午 is the Fire branch, the height of summer in the calendar's own logic. That concentration is where the year's reputation comes from. It is less a bad year than a very undiluted one.
Fire horse personality: what the tradition says
Ask a zodiac site and you will hear that people born in a fire horse year are energetic, independent, quick to act and hard to pin down, with a temper that flares and fades. In Bazi terms that is a description of fire meeting fire.
But the year pillar is the outermost layer of a chart. It is usually read as background: family, generation, the world you were born into. The day master says much more about the person, and two people born in 1966 can have little in common beyond the year.
