Your birthday, read the Bazi way

In short
Bazi means eight characters. It turns the year, month, day and hour you were born into four pairs of Chinese characters, eight in all, and each one carries one of five elements. Western astrology starts from where the planets were. Bazi starts from where your birth falls in calendar cycles that have run for thousands of years. Your zodiac animal is one of the eight. The other seven do most of the work, starting with the one that stands for you.
Four pillars, eight characters
A Bazi chart has four columns, called pillars: one for the year, one for the month, one for the day and one for the hour. That is why the system is also called the Four Pillars of Destiny.
Each pillar holds two characters. The top one is a heavenly stem, one of ten: the five elements, each in a yang and a yin form. The bottom one is an earthly branch, one of twelve, and the branches are where the twelve animals come from. Stems and branches cycle together in sixty combinations, the same sixty that name the years, months, days and hours of the traditional calendar.
So a chart is four of those sixty pairs. The year pair gives you the animal everyone asks about. The other three are just as real and usually more telling.
The one character that stands for you
The top character of the day pillar is called the day master. It is read as you, and everything else in the chart is described by what it is to the day master: what supports it, what it produces, what pressures it, what it competes with.
This is the biggest difference from the zodiac most people know. Everyone born in the same year shares a year animal. The day master changes every day, and the hour pillar changes through the day.
Five elements, and why balance matters
Wood, fire, earth, metal and water relate in two loops. In one, each element feeds the next: wood feeds fire, fire makes earth, earth bears metal, metal carries water and water feeds wood. In the other, each element keeps another in check: wood breaks up earth, earth dams water, water puts out fire, fire melts metal and metal cuts wood.
A chart carries the five in different amounts. A reading asks whether the day master is strong or weak for the season it was born in, which elements it has too much of, and which would help. That last question is where most of the practical advice in Bazi comes from.
An element that looks missing often is not. Each branch hides one to three stems inside it, and a chart with no metal on the surface can still have plenty underneath.
Your life in ten-year chapters
A chart is not only a snapshot. From the month pillar it unfolds a sequence of ten-year periods, usually called luck pillars, each with its own pair of characters, and every year brings its own pillar too. A reading looks at what each period and each year brings to the chart you were born with, which is why the same year can be easy for one person and hard for another.
How to read your own chart in five steps
1. Get the chart right. Use your birth time and place if you know them. The hour depends on solar time rather than the clock, and the year turns in early February, not on 1 January.
2. Find your day master: the top character of the day pillar.
3. Look at the month. The season you were born in decides whether your day master is strong or weak, and it carries more weight than the year.
4. Count the elements, hidden ones included, and note what is plentiful and what is thin.
5. Find the ten-year period you are in now, and read this year's pillar against it.
What Bazi is not
It is not the twelve-animal horoscope, which uses one character of the eight. It is not a fixed script for your life either. The classical texts describe tendencies, strengths and timing, and how much weight you give that is up to you.
Common questions
What does Bazi mean?
Bā zì means eight characters: the two characters in each of the four pillars of a birth chart. The same system is called the Four Pillars of Destiny in English, Saju in Korean and Shichū Suimei in Japanese.
Is Bazi the same as the Chinese zodiac?
No. The zodiac animal is the branch of the year pillar, one character out of eight. Bazi reads all eight, and most of a reading is about the other seven.
Do I need my birth time?
It helps but it is not essential. Without it you still have the year, month and day pillars, six characters out of eight, including your day master. The hour pillar adds detail, and traditional readings link it with children and later life.
How is Bazi different from Western astrology?
Western astrology maps the planets at the moment of birth. Bazi places that moment in calendar cycles of stems and branches and reads the five elements in them. Both look at personality and timing, but they start from different data and rarely say the same thing in the same words.
